Where History and Nature Meet

Joshua Lake
Boyanup, meaning "place of quartz" in Noongar, is a delightful rural town on the banks of the Preston River. This historic settlement, once a key railway junction, retains its old-world charm while embracing a future of sustainable growth.

Boyanup is an intimate, rural village townsite defined by its interwoven green spaces, historic railway infrastructure and heritage walking trails that connect the community to adjacent natural and built heritage.

History buffs will love the South West Rail & Heritage Centre, where vintage locomotives tell the story of the region’s railway legacy. Nature lovers can wander the Preston River Ramble, a scenic walking trail along the river, or visit the lush countryside that surrounds the town. You may even notice that the Munda Biddi trail ventures into this part of the world. Community spirit thrives at the Boyanup Farmers’ Market, where local produce and artisanal goods showcase the town’s agricultural roots. Boyanup is a perfect escape for those seeking a taste of country life with easy access to nearby Bunbury.

History & Heritage

Originally inhabited by the Wadandi Noongar people, the first European exploration of the area was when Dublin solicitor James Bessonnet established a farm in 1846 on Leschenault Location 54. The parcel of 385 acres of land was blessed with a spring and permanent billabong. He named his farm Boyanup referring to boya, ‘Place of Quartz’.
The original Preston Bridge was constructed in 1861, linking the coastal districts with the Blackwood River.  Thomas and Charlotte Simmons built the first timber cottage in Boyanup on land near the bridge in the 1860s.
By 1893 the main southwest railway line was completed, and Boyanup was well positioned at the junction of the lines to Bunbury and Donnybrook. Subsequent extensions to Vasse (Busselton) and Bridgetown, assisted to make the town a prosperous and busy in the early 20th Century.

Further growth of the town has been due to the strong local farming community and mining industry.
