History & Heritage

  • Aboriginal communities lived adjacent to each other, defined by the totem of their land, moving with the seasons from the cooler, higher lands along the escarpment, down river, following the marron and fish to the ocean.
  • The Tuart forests along the coast offered shelter from the coastal breeze and contained the warmth of winter fires. Groups travelled between districts to meet up with each other, often at rivers and river-mouths, in order to trade, share, celebrate, marry, and perform ceremonies.
  • Minninup Homestead, first constructed in 1844 was gradually expanded by successive owners to become the ‘finest property in the district’ when owned by William Ramsay in the early 1900s.
  • The original dwelling at Stratham Park was built by Bunbury constable John Scott and his wife Catherine in 1850. Originally a wattle and daub cottage named for their family home in Scotland, Stratham Park.
  • The impressive Moreton Bay fig trees on Mallokup Road mark the site of the original Stirling School that operated from 1906-1926.
  • Stratham named for the original homestead, Stratham Park, named after John Scott’s family home in Scotland.
